Life-Changing Experience In Kenya

The Boy with Blue Eyes

In 2009 I, Ivana Legname (a sign language interpreter in Italian sign), travelled to Kenya on holiday to a place called Malindi.

I was one of fifty people in a group of tourists. Our travel agent suggested that we all bring with us any items such as pens, notebooks (anything that might be of use for school work) and clothes, used or otherwise that we could donate to the local children. Upon arriving at the hotel and settling our luggage, we made our way to the village of Malindi. Whilst the group was handing out the gifts we had brought with us, I began taking photos of all these enthusiastic children and in the process I noticed there was one child who was isolated from the rest and was crying inconsolably, so I turned to our guide and asked:

“Abraham, why is that child not happily participating along with the others?”
His answer to me was, “Because he is deaf.”

At that moment I had this feeling of being in the right place at the right time, so I turned to the tear laden child, took him in my arms and was taken aback to find that this pitch black boy had beautiful blue eyes. I spontaneously exclaimed, “This boy is beautiful, very beautiful!” At which point our guide responded, “No, he is a son of the Devil!” (the superstition being a blue eyed baby is of the Devil). I emphatically protested saying “This is not true!” despite his insistence to the contrary.

I asked whether this child was going to school, and his mother replied saying that they were too poor to send him to school. I had not realised up to this point that it is not a human right in Kenya for children to have an education, rather, only those that could afford to pay for their schooling could attend. This experience moved me so deeply I was inspired to found a humanitarian association that would later be known as Friends of Kenya. Since that first encounter, Friends of Kenya has been dedicated to helping hearing-impaired children by funding their schooling and donating helpful material in the form of black boards, desks, note books and the like. This also includes medicines useful in the prevention of eyesight and hearing loss. In the immediate future, it is our hope to, with the continued collaboration of our partners and their generous contributions, purchase land and construct a school for these forgotten children of Kenya. We invite you to share in this vision and experience the joy that comes from giving. With this aim we are organising charitable purpose vacations to Kenya for those who wish to actively participate and offer a face to face contribution. Help us help those oppressed by poverty free themselves from the shackles of injustice.
